Food & Wine Magazine Review An Seanachai

Food & Wine Magazine July 2015

By Lorraine Griffin

On a recent wintery summer’s day, we found ourselves battling high  winds on the N25. Plans for a mountain hike thwarted, we headed for refuge instead. An Seanachaí pub and restaurant is a ten-minute drive from Dungarvan.

It’s steeped in history: the original building dates back over 160 years. A whitewashed thatched cottage with black trim, it’s certainly a beacon to any visitors touring these parts.

Once in the narrow doorway, it’s deceptively big with plenty of dining space across the interconnecting rooms. Kitted out with china-laden dressers and exposed stone walls adorned with old photos, a fire in the hearth completed the scene. Unfortunately, the fireside seats were taken so we took a table in another, larger room. For me, this was a tad on the cold side, however the unseasonal weather may have had a lot to do with this.

Staff are friendly and welcoming and I can see why they’ve scooped a Trip Advisor Excellence award for 2014. It’s definitely the kind of place that would easily cater for holidaying families and groups... there really is something for everyone. The menu is extensive with burgers, steak, chicken, fish and vegetarian dishes. On the day we visited, there was also a carvery offering a traditional style Sunday roast and we were told that toasted sandwiches were on offer if we preferred to go a little lighter.

I went for the grilled goat’s cheese salad (€9.50). I would have liked more salad and less of the cheese to bring balance to this dish. Equally, a little less dressing would have worked better here. I found myself eyeing up my companion’s seafood chowder (€8.50) especially when the appreciative sounds started. It was a blustery cold-day hit: creamy, warming and restorative. It came with homemade brown bread, dark and moist (the kind that’s equally good with soup or slathered with fresh butter and jam).
Fish and chips (€16) arrived next for my companion. Two golden parcels of battered cod atop a generous portion of homemade chips. Everything here was the right balance of crispy, fluffy and flaky (€16). My beef and Guinness stew (€14) certainly earned its title as an old favourite. Such intense flavour. The meat was perfectly cooked in its rich herby gravy. It wasn’t long before chips came a-dunking across the table.

There were no surprises in the dessert menu – classics like apple pie, Sherry trifle, rhubarb crumble and chocolate fudge cake. We went for seasonal meringue and strawberries (€5.50) and banoffee (€5.50). Strawberries and cream are a happy marriage; add merIngue and it’s beyond satisfying. The banoffee provided a nice caramel crunch to the baked bananas. A lovely finish to this comforting meal.

An Seanachaí is wholesome in every way. With traditional music nights and storytelling evenings, it certainly lives up to what US tourists expect from an Irish pub but its appeal is universal. It’s delivering on what we all want from a pub: friendly service,
hearty food and good value for money.
